Psalm 19:1–14 “Praying Through the Word.”

Psalm 19:1–14 “Praying Through the Word.”

The Word is Powerful.

The Word transforms our lives.

Let us desire the Word.

((How to Pray with Scripture))

Today, I want to share how we can pray through Scripture—how the Word shapes our prayers and draws us deeper into God’s presence.

When we pray with the Word, we begin by reading a passage, then turning what we read into prayer.
As we read, anything that stirs in our hearts becomes our prayer.
And if nothing comes to mind, we simply move to the next verse and continue reading.

For example, Psalm 23:1–2:

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”

We may pray:

“Lord, You are my Shepherd. Jesus, You are my good Shepherd, and I am Your sheep.
I feel lacking today, but be merciful to me. Teach me the difference between comfort and true peace.”

If nothing comes to mind, we go on to verse 2:

“He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.”

We may pray:

“Lord, lead me to green pastures. My life feels like a desert, like a wilderness.
Guide me. Carry me. Be my rest.”

This is how we begin praying the Scriptures.

The book of Psalms is especially rich for this.
Why? Because every emotion we ever experience in life—joy, grief, confusion, anger, praise, fear—is found in the 150 psalms.
So praying a psalm each day is one of the most powerful ways to cultivate a life of prayer.

Today, let’s look at Psalm 19 and learn two ways to pray.

1. Pray as You Look at God’s Creation (Psalm 19 1–6)

Psalm 19, written by David, is considered by many scholars one of the most beautiful psalms.

David begins by pointing to the created world.
He says that even though creation has no audible voice, it proclaims the glory, artistry, and wisdom of God everywhere.

Through the skies and through the earth, God declares:
“I made you. You bear My image. You matter to Me.”

Even when life is confusing, painful, or overwhelming, God whispers through His creation:
“You are precious. You are my beloved son. You are my beloved daughter.”

So look up. Look around.
Listen to the voice of creation.
Let it draw your heart into prayer, into praise, into trust.

May this grace carry you through today.

2. Pray as You Meditate on God’s Word (Psalm 19 7–11)

Scripture describes God’s Word as more precious than gold and sweeter than honey.
Why? Because the Word gives life.

Psalm 19 lists six reasons:

  1. The Word is perfect—reviving the soul.

  2. The Word is trustworthy—making the simple wise.

  3. The Word is right—bringing joy to the heart.

  4. The Word is pure—enlightening the eyes.

  5. The Word is clean—enduring forever.

  6. The Word is true—righteous altogether.

God’s Word is alive.
It awakens our souls, restores us, and grows us.
And because the Word is eternal and unchanging, it reaches every person, in every place, at every moment.

When that living Word enters our hearts, it saves us, renews us, and transforms us.

3. Pray as One Saved and Loved by Christ (vv. 12–14)

David ends with a confession:
Even though we still sin, the Lord always receives us
because the Lord is our Rock and Redeemer.

Christ has carried all our sins.
He became our atoning sacrifice on the cross.
He cried out, “Father, forgive them.”
And because of this grace, we now belong to God.
We are pleasing to Him because of Jesus.

So we pray with gratitude:

“Lord, lead us by Your Word.
Draw us into deeper fellowship with You through the Scriptures.
Shape our prayers through Your truth.”

A Prayer to Close

“Lord, draw us by Your Word.
Teach us to pray through Scripture.
Lead us into deeper communion with You—
and let our hearts be renewed by Your grace.”

May you begin a life of praying through the Word—starting today.
